A bit of history

Rue Viala

This street is located between rue Saint Charles, boulevard de Grenelle and rue de Lourmel. It is named after Joseph Agricol Viala.

Born in 1780 in Avignon and impassioned by the Revolution’s ideas, Viala was part of the youth National Guard in his native city.

In 1793, rebelling royalists from Marseilles headed towards Avignon and confronted the National Guard on the Durance River.

Viala died while trying to cut the cables that held the pontoon bridges on the right bank of the Durance. His body, pierced by bayonets, was thrown into the Durance.

The events of 9 Thermidor (the fall of Robespierre) – 27 July 1794, which marked the end of the Reign of Terror – prevented the transfer of this child’s urn to the Pantheon as agreed in the National Convention.

The 15th arrondissement

The arrondissement was created in 1860 when the city of Paris annexed two different communes, Vaugirard and Grenelle.  In particular, Grenelle was a new city, having existed for only 30 years. It was a primarily industrial city of 20,000 residents who were mostly new arrivals to the Paris region.
